Hernando County Completes Spoil Island Cleanup in Hernando Beach
(Brooksville, FL) – Hernando County Waterways/Aquatic Services Department has successfully completed the cleanup of the spoil islands located along the north side of the Hernando Beach Channel, following requests from local residents.
The cleanup project, which began in late June and concluded by mid-July, resulted in the removal of a total of 5,420 pounds (2.71 tons) of debris. Within the first two days alone, over 1,500 pounds of material was collected and properly disposed of at the landfill.
Thanks to cooperation from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Hernando County was granted access to the state-owned spoil islands to carry out the debris removal effort. The Waterways Department's swift and thorough response helped restore the area following past storm impacts.
Residents are reminded to always slow down when passing County workboats on the water to ensure the safety of both workers and fellow boaters.
