COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Requiring that structures vulnerable to floods be protected against flood damage is part of the NFIP’s core
purpose and mission. In Florida the community flood damage prevention ordinance and the newest Florida
Building Code (FBC) regulate the minimum construction standards for development identified as vulnerable
to flooding. The FBC requires that within flood hazard areas all new buildings, structures, and portions of
structures and substantial improvements to existing structures be designed and constructed to resist the
flood loads associated with the applicable flood hazard area.
