April is Water Conservation Month in Hernando County
Find Out Ways You Can Conserve Water

(Brooksville, FL) – At the March 25, 2025, Hernando County Board of County Commissioners meeting, a resolution was adopted proclaiming April as Water Conservation Month.

Everyone has a role to play in conserving and protecting Hernando County’s water resources. Watering lawns and landscapes continues to be the highest water use throughout the county. Here are some tips to help save water outdoors.

1.      Add a rain sensor to your irrigation system. This device will automatically halt irrigation when there has been adequate rainfall. Hernando County Utilities Department (HCUD) customers may be eligible for a rebate through Rain Sensor Rebate Program. Learn more here: www.HernandoCounty.us/RainSensorRebate

2.      Inspect your irrigation system regularly, look for leaks, breaks or misaligned spray heads to ensure it is working properly. Also verify that the irrigation timer is correctly set-electric surges or even Daylight Savings Time can throw off those settings.

3.      Choose Florida-Friendly Landscaping plants that thrive on natural rainfall. For ideas, visit: www.HernandoCounty.us/Conservation

4.      Follow the One Day per Week Watering Schedule: Since 2010, Hernando County has implemented a one day per week watering schedule for all residential and commercial properties, including all water sources (such as river, lakes, and private wells):

Addresses ending with: May Water On:

0, 1                                                         Monday

2, 3                                                         Tuesday

4, 5                                                         Wednesday

6, 7                                                         Thursday

8, 9                                                         Friday

Water only before 8 a.m. OR after 6 p.m.

5.      Enforcement: To ensure compliance with the watering schedule, Hernando County has two dedicated Water Resource Code Compliance Officers actively enforcing these regulations.
